The Brother HL-4040CN is a good, cost-effective, single-function color laser printer for offices with standard printing needs. It is boxy and standard-looking, measures 16.5 inches wide, 18.7 inches deep, 12.5 inches tall, and weighs a hefty 64 pounds. At $400.00, this moderately-priced workgroup printer offers great print quality and is network-ready. Among its useful features are reprint, direct-print, and secure print. Those into digital photo and graphics printing will appreciate its USB port for cameras and flash drives.
On the downside, it has slow black print speeds, and its paper input capacity is not expandable. There are no available optional second input trays and optional duplexers for the HL-4040CN, unlike other laser printers in its class.
The HL-4040CN's paper tray can handle up to 250 sheets of plain paper and can manage a range of media sizes, including legal. Its front fold-down panel serves as a 50-sheet manual input tray. It is equipped with adjustable paper guides and a pull-out flap to support long pages.
This printer has a basic control panel with four multi-directional buttons to navigate the menu. It has reprint and direct print buttons that allow users to make prints without touching the computer. Also on the control panel is a two-line text LCD that is backlit and mounted on a swivel plate which allows ease of access. The LCD also informs the user of toner levels through four bars displayed on the screen.
Toner Cartridges
The HL-4040CN's entire front panel flips open to reveal its four TN115 toner cartridges that are positioned on a pull-out tray. For your initial use, included in the package are a set of standard cartridges, one black and three colored. The black has a capacity of 2,500 prints at 5% coverage, while each of the color cartridges can produce around 1,500. Replacement cartridges sell for around $60.00 - $70.00. OEM Brother high-capacity versions are also available at higher prices. The black TN 115 cartridge sells for ($93) and prints about 5,000 pages, while the color cartridges sell for $130.00 each and print about 4,000 pages at 5% coverage.
Also compatible with this printer is the Brother TN-115 Laser Toner, a high-quality compatible laser toner that comes in 5000 and 4000 page yield capacities. Black TN-115 cartridges sell for $58.99 each, while the colored ones cost $63.00. The cartridges can be purchased as a set for $240.00.
Features
The HL-4040CN comes with a 300MHz processor and a 64MB onboard memory that is upgradeable to a maximum of 576MB. It connects to networks via a built-in Ethernet port or USB.
It can make up to 25 pages of N-up prints on one sheet, and 5x5 size poster prints. PictBridge-enabled cameras and USB flash drives connect via the front-mounted USB port to print photos and graphics without having to use a PC.
A nice feature of the HL-4040cn and the TN 115 is the Reprint option, which holds the last print job in the printer's memory. By using the Reprint button, up to 999 copies of a file can be printed by this laser toner even without a computer.
