What is the purpose of a fax cover sheet?

Are they required by law? Unless it has some useful information on it that is not included in the body, I think they're a waste of toner and paper.

Coming from a legal secretary's point of view, they are used for several reasons. One, if you're sending something somewhere where there are several attorneys or to a business with more than one person, it designates the fax while also keeping it confidential. Its like an envelope for a fax. Funny question and they are kind of pointless, not required by law, just a courtesy/professional way to do it.
