Canon Faxphone L80 – Bare Bones Fax Machine/ Printer

Sometimes, a name says it all. The Canon FaxPhone L80 is a bare bones fax/phone combination with none of the bells and whistles found in multifunctional units, though it does come with a USB port for interfacing with Windows based systems.

The Canon FaxPhone L80 is beginning to show its age of seven years, which is more than a lifetime in the technology world, but the L80 surprisingly does feature many of the same standard features that current fax machines still use, such as a high speed Super G3 33.6 kilobyte per second built in modem. This makes for a rapid fax transmission speed of approximately 3 seconds per page, which is similar to what we see in today’s models.

Print resolution is good enough for plain text, running at 600 x 600 dots per inch, though, when faxing, resolutions are reduced to super fine at 203 x 391 dpi, fine at 203 x 196 dpi, and standard at 203 x 98 dpi. UHQ enhanced imaging quality can boost the appearance of quality to some degree.

The automatic document feeder holds up to 30 pages of 20 lb. paper, which is great for any fax machine. With an ADF, large stacks of multiple faxes can be loaded automatically, as apposed to time consumingly hand feeding them one by one. Printing maxes out at only 6 pages per minute when using letter sized paper but, assuming that the intended use for the machine is as a fax machine as opposed to a printer, this should suffice for a home office or light duty scenario. There is also a third use for the machine: a telephone. For those interested in making incoming and outgoing calls directly from a landline, Canon has thrown in a conveniently placed handset and standard number pad.

If you can find one new, Canon has been kind enough to include a large starter cartridge for you with a2,700 page yield. For those interested in fax technology without the high price of top end newer models, picking up a used machine such as the Canon FaxPhone L80 is a great option, as additional toner cartridges are still available.

Though an older model, the unit is not without a range of convenience features; such as 15 standard speed dials, and up to a 100 coded speed dials which can be accessed through a directory search on the single line LCD screen. A 5.5 MB transmission/ reception memory can store up to 350 pages worth of data ensuring your faxes will be stored safely before they are able to be produced in hard copy.

This Energy Star certified unit operates at 660 W max, and comes in a footprint similar to a desktop printer, with dimensions of 17.5″ W x 22.9″ H x 15.9″ D and a 22 lb weight. Those interested in theCanon FaxPhone L80 should consider it for one reason alone: price. If your small business has higher output demands than a light duty fax machine can handle, and has the money to spend for a newer model, something top of the line would be the wiser choice.

Can anyone recommend a really nice external Voice Capable modem?

for use as a sophisticated answering machine and telephone recording device. Preferably one that even allows extraction of Caller ID info (name, number, date and time). I have a notebook so I'd like recommendations for USB, firewire or PCMCIA, though I have previously bought PCI-to-USB & 1394 "Adapters" (aka housings, porters, converters and who knows what else).

Also, can you recommend great answering machine software for the device? I'd like software for detecting if a call is data (FAX exclusively for now) or Voice and directing the call as appropriate. If any of you can recommend any skeleton C code for me to play w/ that'd be awesome too, though I doubt I'll find time to play like that. I'll likely only be able to "plug-n-play" (i.e., plug in the device, load the software and that's it).

And oh.... It'd be really super if it records outgoing call info such as date, time, destination, but most importantly duration to aid in "budgeting."
